Everything we thought we knew about
addiction is being redefined, shifting away
from the notion of moral failing.
Instead, addiction is increasingly recognised as a complex health
issue rooted in brain function and biology, requiring a compassionate
health approach for effective treatment and support.
Addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease characterised by
compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences.
It also goes beyond substance abuse and includes behavioural
addictions like gambling, internet usage, or even work. At its core,
addiction hijacks the brain's reward system, leading to a powerful
and often destructive attachment to a substance or behaviour.
